Welcome to Gloucestershire Junior Roller Derby
We’re a brand-new junior roller derby league for young people aged 7–17 in Gloucestershire.
Our aim is simple: to give young people the opportunity to discover roller skating, try an exciting new sport, make friends and become part of a team.
Whether your child has never stood on roller skates before or is already a confident skater, everyone can have a go.
What is roller derby?
Roller derby is a fast-paced team sport played on roller skates.
It’s a mixture of skating, strategy, teamwork and skill, with players working together to score points while stopping the opposing team from doing the same.
But you don’t need to know anything about roller derby before you start.
We’ll introduce the sport gradually, starting with the fundamentals of skating and building towards the skills, teamwork and strategy that make roller derby so much fun.
More than just skating
We want junior roller derby to be a place where young people can learn much more than how to skate.
Through training and playing together, they’ll have opportunities to develop:
Confidence
Try something new, overcome challenges and discover what they’re capable of.
Skating skills
Develop balance, coordination, agility and control on roller skates.
Teamwork
Learn to communicate, support teammates and work towards a shared goal.
Friendships
Meet other young people, have fun and become part of a welcoming community.
Resilience
Learn that it’s okay not to get everything right straight away – skills improve with practice.
Who is it for?
Gloucestershire Junior Roller Derby is for young people aged 7–17.
You don’t need to be sporty, super-confident or an experienced skater.
You don’t need to know the rules of roller derby.
And you definitely don’t need to arrive knowing how to skate backwards!
We’ll help young people develop their skills step by step, in a supportive environment where they can learn at their own pace.
If you are 18, check out the adult league Severn Roller Torrent that our founding members are part of!
